The therapeutic effect of massive administration of lysozyme chloride (270mg/day), a conservative therapy of acute or chronic sinusitis was evaluated by means of a controlled trial conducted in co-operation with several ENT offices. The control group received an ordinary conservative therapy.<br>In chronic sinusitis, it was shown that the lysozyme group of 156 patients responded to the therapy significantly better than the control group of 109. The response to the therapy of the edemato-polypous type and patients with profuse nasal discharge was the best. A long term observation for six months revealed a prolonged improvement of the lysozyme group, which was significant.<br>In acute sinusitis, however, the effectiveness of lysozyme was shown only in the edemato-polypous type and patients with profuse nasal discharge.<br>The rates of short term effectiveness of the lysozyme group and the control group in chronic sinusitis were 49% and 22%, respectively. The rate of long term effectiveness of both groups in chronic sinusitis were 42% and 25%, respectively.<br>The results were analyzed by the Chi-square test or Mann-Whitney's test.
