Patients with vertigo and ataxia due to lesions of the peripheral labyrinth were treated with YC-93, a vasodilator of cerebral blood vessels. The patients included 15 with Meniere's disease and 3 with head trauma. The results obtained were as follows; (1) This drug was effective in relieving symptoms, particularly vertigo, nausea and vomiting. There were no demonstrable effects on deafness, stiffness of the neck and shoulders and dullness and pain of the head, although a fairly good result was found, with regard to tinnitus and fullness of the ear.
(2) Improvement of vertigo tended to be parallel with reduction and/or disappearance of disequilibrium of the eyes and the body, which included spontaneous and positional nystagmus, impairment of the righting reflex and drift reactions of the upper and lower limbs. However, results from caloric nystagmus test showed no significant improvement despite a fairly long administration.
Thus YC-93 appears to be an effective drug for treatment of aural vertigo.
