説明

The crystalline transformation of cotton fibers from Cellulose-I to Cellulose-IIII by the treatment with liquid ammonia is well known1, 2. The reverse transformation from Cellulose-IIIrh to Cellulose-I by the treatment with hot water is also reported1 . The crosslinking treatment with vapor phase (VP) formaldehyde and dimethloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) after liquid ammonia treatment is expected to be effective to avoid such crystalline transformation during finishing process. In this study, the effects of crosslinking on the structural transfomation of cellulose molecules of the cotton fibers were examined using wide angle X-ray diffraction, CP/MAS, 13C-NMR, and DSC techniques, and the results were discussed on the basis of crystalline transformation, spin-lattice relaxation time, its distribution, and state and amount of water bound to the cotton fibers.<BR>It was found that the crosslinking by VP-formaldehyde is superior to that by DMDHEU in stabilizing the fiber structure. Also the variation of components of short relaxation time in NMR spectra and that of the bound water obtained from the DSC curve for the VP-formaldehyde sample were much smaller compared to those for the DMDHEU sample.
