Description

Eight cases of extracutraneous malignant melanoma of ENT regions are reported. There were 4 cases (68 year-old, female; 69 year-old, male; 65 year-old, female and 76 year-old, female) of malignant melanoma arising from the nasal cavity, 2 cases (57 year-old, female and 52 year-old, male) of malignant melanoma existing in the naso-paranasal sinuses and arising from the paranasal sinuses, 1 case (61 year-old, female) of malignant melanoma from the hard palate and 1 case (70 year-old, male) of that arising from nasopharynx, respectively.<br>Five out of 8 of our patients with malignant melanoma died within one year from admission, the other 3 are well and are being followed up in our outpatient clinic.<br>Patients with mucosal malignant melanoma had a poor prognosis compared to cases of cutaneous origin.<br>Malignant melanoma arising from extracutaneous origins is attributed to the histological implantation or metaplasia of the melanin containing cell. Melanin containing cells were occasionally observed in the epithelium and submucosal tissues of normal oral and nasal cavities.
