Critical band in monaural and binaural hearing (ECB-test) and masking level difference (MLD-test) were measured in 68 patients; most of their chief complaint was hearing impairment. Auditory brainstem responses (ABR) were recorded by stimulating each ear in 58 out of 68 cases to measure peak interval between the Ist and the Vth waves.<br>1) It was infrequent that the test ears which probably had inner ear pathology, showed high threshold by monaural ECB-test: the values above the level of 4dB from the 99% confidence limit of normal ears were defined as abnormal response.<br>2) Binaural tests (i. e. binaural ECB-test or MLD-test) tended to reveal abnormalities when a recruitment phenomenon was existed.<br>3) Although there was no positive correlation between abnormal values and subject's age, abnormality appeared in more than 40% of the cases when the subject's age was above 30, however, it appeared in less than 20% of the cases when the age was below 30.<br>4) Average peak interval between the Ist and the Vth waves of ABR was measured. Mean peak interval in abnormal ECB-response group was slightly longer than that of normal ears, however, statistical analysis (t-test) showed no significant difference between these two groups (p<0.05).
