The Western Regional Storage Trust (WEST): Shared Management of Print Journals on a Large Scale

Abstract

<p>The Western Regional Storage Trust (WEST) is a distributed, retrospective print journal repository program whose members include 102 academic libraries in 17 states in the western United States. About a dozen WEST Archive Holders (so far) have agreed to retain designated titles through the year 2035 at major library storage facilities and at selected campus locations across the region. A smaller number of Archive Builders agreed to proactively consolidate and validate print journal backfiles to create complete runs. WEST performs a sophisticated holdings comparison annually to prioritize titles for archiving based on risk analysis: the degree of risk determines the level of archiving effort applied to that title. WEST archivers disclose archived holdings in OCLC WorldCat and in CRL's PAPR knowledgebase. WEST is funded by member fees and by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, to support archiving efforts by Archive Builders (and other program costs).</p>
