Description

Morphological variation in Monochoria korsakowii and M. vaginalis was explored within an individual, among individuals within a population and among populations within a species, and biological significance of the morphological variation was discussed.
The phenotypic plasticity of characters was found to be different within an individual, and such plasticity differed when an identical character was compared between the taxa. Most of the characters with plasticity were quantitative in the case of either vegetative or reproductive organs, and the plasticity was inherently controlled.Malformed morphology was observed. For example, M. vaginalis usually has unbranched racemes, but the branched inflorescences were also observed. On the other hand, M. korsakowii is the only species having branched inflorescences. Then, the malformed morphology observed in M. vaginalis suggested a close relationship between these two species.
Morphological variation among individuals within a population largely depended on the environmental conditions.Characters such as the number of flowers per inflorescence and leaf length and width varied depending on the depth of water, soil fertility and the other ecological factors.Plasticity of characters was larger among populations when compared to that among individuals within a population.A geographical cline in M. vaginalis was observed among populations within a species.
