Faunal composition and seasonal changes in the number of aquatic Hemiptera and Coleoptera were investigated in a loach-farming paddy in Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The loach-farming paddy (LFP) was filled with water throughout the year, and eight species of Hemiptera and twenty species of Coleoptera were collected. The number of species of adult insects was relatively small from April to July, then increased toward autumn. The number of species of larval insects was small throughout the year. These fluctuation patterns of both adults and larvae were similar to those in the pond (SAIJO 2001). The 23 species observed were classified into five types on the basis of the major habitat of the adults :I) species inhabiting the pond, II) species inhabiting the pond and LFP, III) species equally inhabiting the pond, LFP and the paddies (SAIJO 2001), IV) species inhabiting only the LEP, and V) species inhabiting only the paddies. High faunal similarity was found between the LFP and pond for adults, and between the LFP and paddies for larvae. These results indicate that the LFP provides a habitat for adults of aquatic Hemiptera and Coleoptera when the water in adjacent paddies decreases. In addition, the LFP was used more than the pond but less than the paddies, as a habitat for larvae. These findings suggest that an LFP can provide a substitute habitat for aquatic insects when ponds and paddies become fewer.
