説明

In the ant Formica japonica, the diurnal fluctuation of extranidal activity was studied in a grassland from May to October, 1991,by counting the number of individuals departing and entering nests. The activity was significantly correlated with the maximum temperature of the ground surface, suggesting that extranidal activity is controlled by climatic conditions. When an experimental barrier was established near one colony to suppress its extranidal activity, the foraging workers of a neighboring colony increased in number on one occasion, indicating that extranidal activity of this ant species is partly under the control of neighboring colonies.
