Abstract

NAKASUGA, Tsuneo, Hohyo OYAMA (Fac. Agr., Univ. Ryukyus, Naha) and Masahiro HARUKI (Fac. Agr., Hokkaido Univ., Sapporo) Studies on the mangrove community. I. The distribution of the mangrove community in Japan. Jap. J. Ecol. 24,237-246 (1974) The distribution of the mangrove community from Kiire (Kagoshima Pref.) to Iriomotejima (Okinawa Pref.) is described. There are 3 stands in Kyushu, 5 in Tanegashima, 1 in Yakushima, 3 in Amamioshima, 31 in Okinawa, 1 in Kumejima, 7 in Miyakojima, 10 in Ishigakijima and 24 stands in Iriomotejima. In these investigations six mangrove species were observed : Kandelia candel (L.) DRUCE, Bruguiera conjugata (L.) MERR., Rhizophora mucronata LAMK., Avicennia marina (FORSK.) VIERH., Sonneratia alba SM. and Lumnitzera racemosa WILD. Three tree types of K. candel were observed : (I) stocky tree type, (II) lanky tree type and (III) bulky tree type. The 8 types of habitat segregation of the mangrove species from coastal and riverside mudflats towards inland are as follows ; 1) K.candel (I) type. 2) K.candel (I) type-K.candel (II) type. 3) K.candel (I) type-K.candel (III) type. 4) K.candel (I) type-B.conjugata・K.candel (III) type. 5) B.conjugata・K.candel (III) type. 6) A.marina・R.mucronata-A.marina・S.alba・R.mucronata-(K.candel)・S.alba・B.conjugata. 7) S.alba・(K.candel)-R.mucronata・B.conjugata. 8) R.mucronata-R.mucronata・B.conjugata-B.conjugata.
