Description

Outpatients, over 40-years-old, with herpes zoster without any other immunosuppressive diseases were administered either Vidarabine at a dose of 300 mg/day (80 cases) or Acyclovir intravenously 500mg once a day, for 3 to 7 days (25 cases). A comparative study was then conducted on patients with persistent postherpetic neuralgia (PHA) for 30 days following the onset of the disease. The patients were divided into the two above groups and another group not given any antiviral compounds (51 cases). The ratios of PHN in the groups treated with Vidarabine and Acyclovir and those not given antiviral compounds were 25%, 24% and 29% respectively. These values did not differ statistically. Starting the administration of Vidarabine or Acyclovir within 5 days after the onset of the disease showed no noticeable effect in decreasing PHN. However, a higher incidence of PHN was noted in patients with a sleep disturbance due to herpetic neuralgia at the first visit as compared to patients without such a disturbance.
