Abstract

Minoxidil (MX), whether applied topically or taken orally, has been said to increase the thickness and length of hairs. Knowing the functions of MX on the scalp hairs, we investigated the effect of MX on preconfluent human hair follicle cells in culture. The hair follicle cells used were derived from plucked scalp hair follicles according to the culture methods previously reported by us. Both plating efficiency and colony growth were supressed by MX at all the drug concentrations tested: 1, 10 and 100 μg/ml. Cell morphology was not so affected by MX. Terminal differentiations such as stratification of cells and appearance of large denucleated cells were seen at all MX levels, as in the control. We found no evidence that MX activates the proliferation, or modulates the differentiation of HFC in vitro.
