Abstract
Three cases of arachnidism are reported. Two of the 3 cases were grade IV based on Ohri’s classification, consisting of severe general symptoms and severe pain. We investigated 57 cases of Arachnidism in Japan from 1954 to 1997. Thirty-five of the 57 patients had been bitten by Chiracanthium japonicum. Twenty-five cases occurred in July, and the most frequently bitten site was the hands, especially the thumb and the index finger. Fourteen of the 57 patients demonstrated grade IV disease based on Ohri’s classification, and 13 of these 14 cases were also bitten by Chiracanthium japonicum. The most effective medication for grade IV arachnidism appears to be the systemic administration of corticosteroids.
