Description

We report a 29-year-old Japanese woman with pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP). In the 37th week of pregnancy, she noticed the development of intensely itchy erythema on her abdominal striae. Small erythematous papules were also seen on her axillae and extremities. Her sleep was even disturbed by severe itching. A histological examination showed edema in the papillary dermis and perivascular lympho-histiocytic infiltration in the upper to middle part of the dermis. A direct immunofluorescence study of the skin lesion revealed C3 deposition at the capillary vessel walls, but not IgG, A and M. From these observations, a diagnosis of PUPPP was made. The skin eruptions and itching did not improve after treatment with topical cream containing budesonide and the oral administration of chlorpheniramine maleate. The skin eruptions with itching spontaneously disappeared shortly after delivery.
