Abstract

Representing only about 2% of cases, the amelanotic variant is a relatively rare form of malignant melanoma. We here in report two such cases of amelanotic malignant melanoma. Both cases were preceded by melanotic lesions at the same site, which gradually lost their color as the lesions enlarged or eroded. We hypothesize that the pigmentary changes were associated with ongoing malignant progression. As a consequence of their poor pigmentation, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish amelanotic melanomas from other tumors, including benign tumors such as pyogenic granuloma. Obtaining information about earlier pigmented lesions should be helpful in making more precise diagnoses and in preventing either insufficient or inappropriate excisions.
