Description

An outbreak of parvovirus B 19 (PVB 19) infection occurred at our hospital, infecting both staffs and inpatients. Clinically, the rash differed from those of typical erythema infectiosum in adult patients, and 12 of 14 cases had either papular or reticular erythema and purpura on their extremities. In addition, arthralgia, myalgia, headache and malaise occurred in some patients. The clinical diagnosis was difficult because the rash and infectious seasons of PVB 19 infection and rubella are quite similar. Three blood samples from fourteen patients were examined for anti-PVB-specific IgM and IgG antibodies and they were also tested for PVB 19-DNA by the polymerase chain reaction, and all showed positive results.
