Description

It is well known that nodular lesions sometimes develop on port wine stains. The predilection site of such nodules is localized to the sun exposed area. However, the reason why such nodules develop is still not completely understood. The blood flow of such nodules is greater than that of port wine stains. In addition, hyperplasia of arteriovenous anastomoses are also prominent in the dermis of these nodules. The cause of hypertrophic port wine stains are thus suggested to be mainly due to the hyperplasia of arteriovenous anastomosis.
