Description

We studied toxicodermia, except for typical viral eruptions such as measles, in 159 patients who were hospitalized and treated at our department from 1993-1996, and also in 1998. The number of all the patients who were hospitalized during these two periods was 2,969, and the proportion of toxicodermia was 5.4%. The patients ranged in age from 2 to 89 years old, and the the largest number of patients were those in their 60’s. We diagnosed 91 patients (57.2%) to have drug eruptions, and 44 patients (27.7%) to have infectious exanthema due to virus, bacteria, and mycoplasma. Drug skin tests, consisting of a patch test, scratch patch test, and challenge test, were performed according to the ICDRG standard against 330 drugs that were suspected to be related to the eruptions, and the average was 3.6 drugs per person. Seventy-seven of these 330 drugs showed a positive reaction, and 63 of the 91 patients (96.2%) diagnosed to have a drug eruption showed positive findings for drug skin tests. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, drugs for anti-peptic ulcers, and common cold medicines, often showed a positive response to drug skin tests. The type of exanthema frequently differed among the cases, even when the same drug was suspected to cause the eruptions. Therefore drug skin tests appeared to be useful for detecting causative drugs.
