Effect of Loratadine for Chronic Pruritic Skin Disease of the Elderly

We have evaluated effectiveness and safety of the loratadine for elder patients with chronic pruritic skin disease. Forty patients, 20 men and 20 women, over age of 60 were given 10mg/day of loratadine and improvement of the skin rash, itching were assessed. Skin score significantly decreased from 7.2±0.5 to 5.1±0.4 at day 7, 3.6±0.4 at day 14, and 2.4±0.3 at day 28. Itching score in the day were decreased from 2.6±0.1 to 1.3±0.2 at day 7, 1.0±0.1 at day 14, 0.6± 0.1 at day 28. Itching score at night were decreased from 2.9±0.1 to 1.8±0.2 at day 7, 1.3±0.2 at day 14, 0.7±0.1 at day 28. Overall improvement were more than 72.5%. Adverse effects such as sleepiness, dry mouth were not observed, and laboratory data abnormality were not observed either. Taken together loratadine were considered to be very useful in treating pruritic skin disease of the elderly.
