Abstract

We evaluated growth-related morphological variation in Mongoloniscus koreanus Verhoeff, 1930. Elliptic Fourier descriptors revealed that two secondary sex characteristics, male pleopod 1 exopodite and male pereiopod 7 carpus, changed with growth. The length ratio of the flagellar articles on antenna 2 also exhibited body-size-related intraspecific variation. The morphological variations resulted in overlap with the values for M. vannamei (Arcangeli, 1927), a species that coexists with M. koreanus. Conversely, the position of the noduli laterales exhibited low intraspecific variation and differed distinctly between the two species; this difference was also supported by DNA sequence data. Our results suggest that the morphological characters for secondary sex characteristics and antenna 2, which are currently used to delimit species, change with growth and have the potential to result in misidentification of small M. koreanus.
