Description

Eleven species of Tectocepheus recorded from Japan were reviewed. A new oribatid species Tectocepheus satsumaensis n. sp. is distinguished from congeners by having: a rostral appendage mounted to the rostrum like a conventional door enclosed with rails and stiles. The morphological character like rostral appendage is also observed in T. elegans Ohkubo, 1981. However, the new species differs from T. elegans by having: two types of notogastral setae that differ in structure; large, rounded and darker-coloured tubercles on cerotegument of prodorsum, notogaster, ventral plate, acetabula I and II, inner medial region of genital plates, outer region of anal plates, and femora and trochanter of leg II–IV; setae le shorter than their mutual distance; lateral setae on tibia I thick spiniform bearing a few protrusions; an non-overlapping carina, but without spur on trochanters III and IV.
