Progress of the Cryptomeria japonica pollen front for 2014 was monitored at 90 sites, distributed from Kyushu to Hokkaido, by using a Durham sampler (81 sites) or both the Durham sampler and IS-Rotary sampler (9 sites), to track the first day of pollen release. Results from the Durham sampler show that, by late January, the pollen front had reached most of Shikoku and Kyushu, southern parts of Kanto, Tokai, Kii Peninsula, and western parts of Chugoku. By early to mid February the front had progressed from southern to northern areas of Kanto and Tokai, and also to the southern and central regions of Kinki and, with the exception of its western region, the whole of Chugoku. By late February, the front had moved northwards to the southern and central regions of Tohoku, that face the Pacific Ocean, and to central Chubu and parts of Hokuriku and northern Kinki. By early to mid March the front had reached central and northern areas of Tohoku, facing the Sea of Japan, and the other areas of Hokuriku. By late March, the front had reached northern regions of Tohoku. The front finally arrived in the southern part of Hokkaido by early to mid April.
