Abstract

A new electro-discharge grinding method (ED-grinding method) using a trial manufactured metal bond diamond wheel containing an electrically conductive diamond grit (EC-D-grit-wheel) is proposed. In this method, two effects are expected to occur—removal of workpiece by electrical discharge machining, and an in-process dressing action of the cutting edges on the grit. To investigate the basic grinding properties, ED-grinding with the EC-D-grit-wheel was performed against tungsten carbide under ED conditions of no load voltage E0=60V, pulse duration te/to=20/30μs, and set peak current Ip=0∼12A. The results indicated a significant decrease in the grinding force when the peak current was set at larger than Ip=8A.
