Description

We statistically analyzed clinical characteristics of 47 cases of extramammary Paget's disease treated from 2001 through 2012 in the Department of Dermatology, Sapporo Medical University Hospital. The average age of the patients was 74 yeas old, and the male/female ratio was 2.3 : 1. Lesions were present on the genitals of 39 patients, on the perianal regions of 6, and on both the axillary and genital regions of 2. TNM classification and stages were determined according to the guidelines put forth in 2010 by the Japanese Skin Cancer Society. In the present study, patients were classified as stage IA (22 cases), stage IB (3), stage II (8), stage III (7) and stage IV (2). Local recurrences were observed in 6 patients after an average of 119.7 months during a period of eight months through 21 years and ten months. Distant metastases were observed in 5 patients. The period between excision and detection of distant metastasis was nine to 50 months, which was shorter than that between excision and local recurrence. Three patients with high levels of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) died from the distant metastases of the disease, suggesting that serum CEA levels might be useful as a prognostic marker for survival.[Skin Cancer (Japan) 2014 ; 29 : 12-17]
