Ultrasound sonography using 15MHzor lower frequencies has been utilized as a simple, noninvasive diagnostic procedure in daily medical practice. However, its dermatological applications have been mostly limited to the measurements of the skin thickness and to the deep dermal or subcutaneous pathologies. This was probably because the echogenic reflections at the skin surface was too strong and obscured the superficial details of the skin including horny layer, epidermis and papillary dermis, and also because image resolutions of the conventional echograms were far from satisfactory compared with those in routine microscopic sections.<br>In the present study, new 25, 40 and 60MHz ultrasonic sector scanners were made and applied to normal and abnormal human skin and visible mucous membrane. The echograms were later compared with histological sections made through the same scanning planes. With the new scanners, the malpighian layer of the epidermis was demonstrated in normal palms and soles. Cross and longitudinal sections of hair follicles were also visualized together with epithelial cell nests, dense inflammatory infiltrates, moderately severe edema and large cutaneous veins.
