説明

The author studied the registered dietitian(RD)education system in the USA at The Ohio State University. Here, I report how the education system in the USA differs from that in Japan. The primary difference in the systems is the practical training. In the USA, the internship is regarded as very important as evidenced by the recent change in required time for the internship from 900 hours to 1 , 200 hours(beginning in 2009). Therefore upon the completion of the internship(within a coordinated program or post graduation from a didactic program)the dietitian is competent to work at a high level of practice. The other difference is that the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetic Education(CADE)determines and approves the RD education standards and the Commission on Dietetics Registration(CDR) develops the registration exam and continuing education requirements for the RD.CADE and CDR are agencies for the American Dietetic Association, not a government agency. The high level of learn-by-doing teaching system guarantees the high practice level of the RD and equality with other healthcare providers in the USA.
