We reported an 11-year-old female with EDTA-dependent pseudothrombocytopenia (EDTA-PTCP) who had been misdiagnosed as having idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura for one and a half years. The progressive drop in platelet counts occurred over the times in blood anticoagulated with EDTA and sodium citrate. The blood smear anticoagulated with EDTA revealed remarkable agglutinations of platelets. The serum of the patient induced the agglutination of platelets from healthy donors in the presence of EDTA. The level of platelet-associated IgG in blood anticoagulated with EDTA by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was significantly increased, while in heparin blood was within normal levels. EDTA-PTCP is often misdiagnosed. Therefore, awareness of this entity by all physicians is essential.
