Abstract

This paper examines the characteristics of livelihood strategies of households and the role of kinship in their livelihoods in Africa by analyzing some detailed survey data on three villages in Bunyala district in western Kenya.
African households diversify their livelihood strategies through on-farm and off-farm activities. We divide the households into five groups according to similar livelihood diversification strategies and explore the implications on income levels and diversity. Many households combine on-farm activities and informal off-farm activities, while other households depend on the donation from others.
However, it is difficult to explain the mechanism of their livelihoods by examining the limited property level of these households. So we analyzed the process of access to assets and distribution by focusing on the role of paternal Kinship. Kinship network contains a lot of property accesses, leads the reciprocal relation among relative households, and reduces the economic discrepancy among households. However, disparity among households cannot be completely equalized. A group of relative households consists of diversified households that have different assets and engage in different activities. Furthermore, kinship network spreads through matrimonial relation and ritual kindred. It is considered that the kinship of such a wide interpretation takes a role in bringing social status in rural areas.
