Description

Observation on the copulation and egg-laying behaviors in the ivory shell, Babylonia formosae formosae was made in the period from October, 1990 to January, 1991. Samples were caught by bottom trawling from Tung-kang, Taiwan. Copulation was observed once and interrupted by the disturbance of human activities. The number of capsules deposited by a female per time ranged from 5 to 101 with total eggs of 44 to 1786. The mean number of capsules deposited per female per season was 29.4. The fecundity per female per season was about 610. No significant correlation was found between body size and the number of capsules deposited or the number of eggs per capsule. The reproductive characters of B. formosae formosae is different from B. formosae habei. In addition, the fecundity of B. formosae formosae is lower than other neogastropods.
