Abstract

The size structure and distribution pattern of the cerithiid gastropod Clypeomorus subbrevicula (Oostingh) were studied on an intertidal cobbled shore at Ishigaki Island, in subtropical Japan. The gastropods were collected with a quadrat approximately trimonthly from May 1997 to September 1998. Temporal fluctuation in size structure suggested that cohorts differ in terms of recruitment period (September-December or June-September) and maximum life span (> 14 months or < 13 months). Each cohort showed high population density where cobble coverage was high, and for each month an older cohort occurred at lower shore levels than a younger cohort did. Such features of life cycle and distribution patterns are discussed in relation to environmental factors specific to the study site.
