Cytogenetic features of a Crassostrea virginica oyster population were studied with specimens obtained from Tabasco, Mexico. The gonadal tissue was processed in order to obtain mitotic and meiotic chromosomes. This oyster karyotype was compared to that from New Haven, Connecticut. Both karyotypes are homologous in the diploid number and chromosomal morphology, which shows a karyotypic stability in spite of the differences in geographical locations. This information could be useful to solve taxonomic identification problems in oyster populations of this species, regardless of the variations in shell morphology.
