A foamless flotation technique was applied to the determination of copper at the ppb level. It is based on the extraction flotation of copper as 3-(2-pyridyl)-5, 6-dipheny1-1, 2, 4-triazine (PDT)-copper(I) chelate-lauryl sulfate ion pairs into a mixture of isopentyl alcohol and butyl acetate (2:1 in vol.), conversion of the Cu-PDT complex to diethyldithiocarbamate complex in the organic phase and subsequent spectrophotometric determination of copper. The standard procedure is as follows. Take 500 ml of sample solution (pH 9.09.2) containing less than 20 μg of copper. Adjust the solution to 8 × 10 -4 M in sodium tartrate, 0.04% in hydroxylammonium sulfate, 5 × 10 -4 M in sodium tetraborate, 2 × 10-5 M in PDT and 1.7 × 10-6 M in sodium lauryl sulfate. Place the solution in a flotation cell. Add 5.0 ml of the mixed solvent, which will cover the surface of the aqueous solution. Bubble nitrogen through the aqueous phase at a flow rate of 60 ml min-1. After 5 min of bubbling, remove the organic phase into a flask containing 1 ml of ethanolic sodium diethyldithiocarbamate solution (0.1%) and dilute to 5 ml with the mixed solvent. Measure the absorbance of the solution at 433 nm against the reagent blank. Copper (6.3μg) can be concentrated with about 97% yield from the aqueous solution, the concentration factor being about 100.
