A recovery determination of the standard reference trace aliphatic alcohols (C2C5) was made at the two levels of about 23 and 81 ng/l in 10 m3 odor free room by the cold trap method with liquid oxygen. The chromatographic conditions were as follows : main column packing, 0.5% PEG 1500+0.2% KOH on Carbopack B 60/80 mesh; precolumn packing, glass beads treated with NaOH, 30/60 mesh; column size, 1.5 m × 3 mm i.d. for main column, 31 cm × 5 mm i.d. for precolumn, glass column, respectively; column temperature, 135°C; carrier gas, nitrogen 65 ml/min. Eight alcohols, i.e., methanol, ethanol, 1- and 2-propanol, 1- and 2-butanol, 1- and 2-pentanol were separated. within about 15 minutes without tailing. The repeatability of the retention times and the peak area (as the counts of digital integrator) of (0.220) nano moles of the eight alcohols in the cold trap method were less than 3% and 10.3% in the coefficient of variation, respectively. The detector (flame ionization detector) response produced a straight line relationship of the peak area with (11000) ng of the eight alcohols. The minimum detectable quantity of the eight alcohols were about 0.5 ng. No evidence was found for the interference to the present method of the other compounds, such as water, carbon dioxide. The present method. was applied to the determination of the known concentrations of the seven alcohols in 10 m3 odor free room. The repeatability of the determined values of the concentrations was less than 9.8% in coefficient of variation.
