Determinations of metal sulfides, oxidized and elementary sulfurs as thionine have been studied. Metal sulfides soluble in hydrochloric acid solution were heated with 6 mol dm-3 hydrochloric acid at 150°C for 30 min in the hydrogen sulfide generation and absorption apparatus and the generated hydrogen sulfide was absorbed into alkaline solution. This method was named the trap method. The alkaline solution was used for the determination of sulfides and sulfurs as thionine. Ninety percent of the sulfide ion was quantitatively recovered. Alkaline sulfides such as sodium sulfide were separated from metal sulfides by extracting them into 0.1 mol cm-3 sodium hydroxide solution and determined by applying the trap method. Metal sulfides which were slightly soluble in hydrochloric acid solution were quantitatively recovered by applying the trap method in the presence of metallic iron. Oxidized and elementary sulfurs were reduced by the reducing agent, hydroiodic acid, and absorbed into alkaline solution. The alkaline solution contained hydrogen iodide in this case. Hydrogen sulfide was then regenerated by acetic acid and absorbed into the alkaline solution. The sulfide ion in the solution was determined as thionine. Elementary sulfur was selectively extracted by cyclohexane and determined by this reducing procedure. Chemical state analysis of sulfur in zinc blende was carried out by these methods.
