X-Ray photoelectron spectrometry was applied to the analysis of aqueous solutions. Sample solutions {(100400)μl} were pipetted on aluminum plate and carefully evaporated to dryness by infrared lamp. The photoelectron spectrum of the residue on this plate was instantly measured. This operation is simple, and the total time required is only 30 minutes. The suitable condition for the preparation of measuring samples was investigated by using ammonium nitrate solutions of known concentration. An ammonium nitrate solution of 1 ppm evaporated on Al plate is detectable by two peaks of N 1s photoelectron. When lead chloride was used as an internal standard in order to obtain the relative intensity of N 1s photoelectron peak, the relative intensity of Nls to Pb 4f5/2 was linear to the concentration of ammonium ion up to 9 ppm. This technique was practically applied to the determination of nitrogen compounds such as nitrate, nitrite, and ammonium ion in the river water. The ratio of nitrate and ammonium was comparable to the value obtained from a usual method although the nitrite was overestimated. The present method is also applicable for the state analysis of other elements in dilute natural waters.
