Description

MEHQ was determined by the polarographic method, using the quantitative nitrosation of MEHQ and the polarographic reduction of the nitroso group to the amine. Nitrosation of MEHQ in aqueous solution was done by nitrous acid in 10 min. at 80°C.
Polarogram of nitroso-MEHQ gives two waves in basic solution. They were due to the partial dinitrosation of MEHQ. The difference of half wave potentials between two waves increased with pH. The second wave height was constant at pH 9.012.4 and was not influenced by acetic acid concentration and the temperature at the nitrosation reaction. 2×10-510×10-4M MEHQ could be determined from the wave height at pH 12.5×10-4M hydroquinone did not interfere the determination of 1×10-4M MEHQ.
Moreover, it was found that nitroso-MEHQ was extracted by ether quantitatively at pH 24, and 28 ×10-6M MEHQ in aqueous solution was determined within an error -6% by combining this extraction.
