The determination of the trace amount of heavy metal and chloride ions was studied using a liquid chromatography with an easily attachable mini-precolumns for the purpose of preconcentration. A large amount of sample solution was passed through the mini-columns, and thereafter the columns were equiped to the liquid chromatography. Ion-exchange resin of the particles smaller than (200400) mesh was preferable as the packing material for the mini-column. Cationexchange resin was suitable for the concentration of heavy metal ions in slightly acidic solution, and anionexchange resin for cadmium ion in 1N HCl solution and for chloride ion. The satisfactory recoveries were obtained for Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Co2+ and Cd2+ from the sample solution up to 100 ml passed through it by the flow rate of below 10 ml/min. The reproducibility of the recovery of ions was ±6% by C. V. except that of Pb2+ which was irreversibly absorbed on the fresh resin. The concentration process was not perfectly achieved when Zn2+ was concentrated on the anion exchange resin from 1 N HCl solution, and heavy metal ions on the chelate resin of (1448) mesh from slightly acidic solution. The method was useful for the analysis of the sample which contained those ions below ppb level and was applied to the determination of chloride in distilled water and of heavy metal ions in tap water.
