Description

A new method for the determination of water in plastic chips was established, whereby the sample was heated in nitrogen at 100200°C, and the vaporized water was collected in an anhydrous solvent (1:1 mixture of methanol and ethylene glycol) and titrated immediately with Karl Fischer reagent. By this method, the determination of water was carried out on chips of polyethyleneterephthalate, Nylon, polycarbonate, polypropylene, polyethylene, by heating for 3060min. at below 200°C and reproducible results were obtained.<BR>The method is very simple, and an accurateresult is obtained in a short time in comparison with usual solvent extraction method, dissolution method or cold trap method. It is also applicable for the determination of water in many other solid substances.
