A method of determination of a trace amount of zinc in cast iron and pig iron was presented, in which zinc was polarographically determined in hydrochloric acid, after the disturbing iron as a main component was removed by the extraction with MIBK and other coexisting elemnts, copper, nickel, chromiun, etc., were separated by use of the anion exchanger.
The sample (1g) in a conical beaker was dissolved in a solution composed of 10ml perchloric acid, 4ml. nitric acid, and 15ml water, the heating was continued until the evolution of white fume became vigorous, the residue was dissolved in conc. hydrochloric acid and the solution was transferred into a separatory funnel together with 6N hydrochloric acid washings of the beaker. This was shaken with 30ml MIBK for extraction of iron. The aqueous layer was transferred into another separatory funnel and the rest of iron was extracted with 30ml MIBK.
The aqueous layer was taken into a 100ml beaker and it was evaporated almost to dryness with heating. The residue was taken up in 10ml 2N hydrochloric acid, passed through an anion exchange column Amberlite IRA 400 (6φ×50mm) and washed with 30ml 2N hydrochloric acid. The zinc was liberated by passing 30ml water and the effluent was collected into a 50ml measuring flask. This was treated with 10ml. 6N hydrochloric acid and made up to the mark with water. An aliquot was taken into an electrolytic bottle, nitrogen was passed through for driving off oxygen and the polarogram from -0.8 to-1.1V was taken.
0.0010.01% of zinc in cast iron or pig iron was determined by this procedure.
