抄録

A method for determination of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in nitrogen (N2) has been established Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometrically applying the flow method technique. A container coated with gold has been used for the preparation of the sample mixture gas of SO2 and N2. To avoid the adsorption of SO2 on the wall, sample was flowed continuously through the cell. The pressure of 3 atm with the resolving power of 0.5cm-1 has been proved to be sufficient to obtain necessary pressure broadening. It was confirmed that the absorbance (α) was proportional to the product of the partial pressure (p0) and the cell length (l) at the condition above mentioned. The proportional constant α was determined to be 0.00888 ± 0.00010 (Torr-1cm-1). Consequently, it was possible to determine SO2 in N2 by this method, within an error limit of 1.9%, where the applicable concentration of SO2 was from 300 ppm to 15%. In the case of using pure SO2 sample, the absorbance was observed to be 2% less than that for foreign gas broadened ones (SO2 in N2) due to the self-broadening effect of its spectrum.
