Abstract

A microscale technique for the preconcentration of V at sub-ppb level has been developed. A 10-ml aliquot of the filtered sample and 0.5 ml of 2 M ammonium acetate buffer were pipetted into a mini-column containing 0.25 ml of Chelex 100 resin. The sample solution was adjusted to pH 4.0. By vigorous shaking of the mixture for 30 min (batch operation), V was adsorbed on the resin. The resin was allowed to stand to settle, and the solution was drained through the perforated disc (column operation). After the resin was rinsed with water, V was stripped from the resin with 0.25 ml of 2 M NH4OH. The eluate was submitted to V determination by graphite furnace AAS using a pyrolytic graphite coated tube. A preconcentration factor of 40 times was obtainable using 10 ml of sample. The lower limit of determination was 0.07 μg/1(10 σ). Relative standard deviations were 4.1% (n=5) for 1.25 μg/l of V in river water and 2.7% (n =4) for 1.55 μg/l of V in seawater.
