Separation and determination of aluminium(III)-and chromium(III)-cupferron complexes by HPLC.

A simple and rapid method was established for the separation and determination of aluminium(III) and chromium(III) complexes of Cupferron (N-nitrosophenylhydroxylamine ammonium salt). The aluminium(III) and chromium(III) complexes were precipitated at pH 2.5 from the reaction mixture of each metal ion and Cupferron solution. Chromatographic separation could be achieved by a polystyrene column (6.0 mm i.d.×150 mm length) with acetonitrile-water (98/2, v/v) as eluent. The calibration curves for the aluminium(III) and chromium(III) complexes were linear in the concentration range of 501000 ng cm-3. The detection limit for aluminium(III) and chromium(III) was 0.27 ng cm-3 and 0.47 ng cm-3 with a relative standard deviation of 5.6% and 2.1% at a concentration level of 50 ng cm-3, respectively. The recovery of aluminium(III) and chromium(III) was 107% and 106%, respectively. By this method, aluminium(III) and chromium(III) in river water samples could be determined without any pretreatment processes and the analytical results almost agreed with those of the conventional spectrophotometric method. Thus the HPLC method proposed here can be applied to the analysis of environmental samples.
