Lead thiosulfato complex is formed when thiosulfuric acid ion is added to a sample solution containing a trace amount of lead. The complex can be extracted into isopropyl acetate containing trioctylmethylammonium chloride (Capriquat). The resulting organic phase can be used for the atomic absorption analysis. To a sample solution containing up to 100 μg of lead, sodium thiosulfate was added and the concentration of thiosulfuric acid was adjusted to 0.05 M. The solution was adjusted to pH 5 with 5 ml of 10% citric acid-ammonium hydroxide solution. The total volume was made up to 50 ml with water. The thiosulfato complex was extracted with 10 ml of 3 vol. % solution of Capriquat in isopropyl acetate. The absorbance of the organic phase in air-acetylene flame was measured at 283.3 nm. A calibration curve obtained was straight up to 100 μg of lead. The standard deviation obtained from 7 runs was 1.8% for the determination of 50μg of lead. The presence of more than 1 mg of Cd(II), Cr (III), Cr (VI) and Fe (III) gave negative error, but other ions did not interfere with the determination. This method was applied to measure lead in zinc.
