Abstract

A method has been presented for the analysis of sulfonic acids and salts by gas-liquid chromatography of their volatile derivatives. The sulfonic acid and salt were converted first to the sulfonyl chloride by reaction with phosphorous pentachloride. Then, without isolation, the sulfonyl chloride was converted to the thiol by reduction with lithium tetrahydridoaluminate hydride. Naphthalenemono- and dithiol isomers were converted to trimethylsilyl derivatives with N, O-bis (trimethylsilyl) acetamide. The thiol derivatives and the trimethylsilyl derivatives were separated on a (1m×3mm) glass column packed with 3% of OV-1 on Chromosorb W DMCS {(80100) mesh}. This method was applied to sodium toluenemono- and disulfonate and sodium naphthalenemono-, di- and trisulfonate and sodium dodecanesulfonate.
