Abstract
The coprecipitation of cobalt(II) with zinc(II) 8-hydroxyquinolate, ZnQ2, follows logarithmic distribution law, when the chelate is homogeneously precipitated by the hydrolysis of 8-acetoxyquinoline(AQ). It was found that the logarithmic distribution coefficient, λ, for the coprecipitation depends on the precipitation rate and is equal to the ratio of the precipitation rate constant of the micro component to that of the macro component. The second order rate constants for the formation of the precipitate represented by the equation : M2++2AQ_??_MQ2+2CH3COOH+2H+ were calculated as 2.20 mol-1 min-1 for zinc chelate and 1.74 mol-1 min-1 for cobalt chelate at pH 5.0 and 50°C. The value of the observed distribution coefficient, λobs. =0.74, at pH 5.0 and 50°C closely agreed with the calculated value, λcalc.=0.79. The logarithmic distribution coefficient did not relate to the function of the solubility products and was independent of the initial molar ratio of micro component to macro component.<BR>It was concluded that the logarithmic distribution coefficient for the coprecipitation of cobalt(II) with zinc (II) 8-hydroxyquinolate was quantitatively explained in terms of the precipitation rates.
