Abstract

Individual particle analysis of airborne particulates in urban atmosphere was performed to make a source apportionment and conduct a methodological investigation. Three groups of samples were collected from an underpass of a heavy traffic avenue (samples A and B) and at a site situated somewhat distant from avenues (sample C). 100150 particles of 0.520μm in size were arbitrarily selected from each sample and analyzed by electron probe micro analyzer to determine their compositions. Cluster analysis algorithms were used for compositional datasets to classify the particles into characteristic groups. Over two thirds of the particles in samples A and B were apportioned to three major sources, e.g., soot from diesel engine vehicle, tire dust and soil/mineral. Some particles in sample B were concluded to have come from construction material. The major sources of sample C were found to be soil/mineral, lime and iron. Based on these analyses, source apportionment of atmospheric particles could be carried out quite effectively by individual particle analysis and cluster analysis conducted in conjunction.
