Abstract

A case of cavernous lymphangioma of the upper mediastinum is reported. Including this case, there have been 9 reported similar cases in Japan. The patient, a 56-year-old female, was admitted to Mie General Medical Center with an upper mediastinal mass which was detected on a chest CT scan. A preoperative diagnosis of neurogenic tumor was made based on the findings of chest CT scan and MR imaging. The tumor was excised through a collar incision and found to consist of a spongelike structure and fluid. A postoperative diagnosis of cavernous lymphangioma was made histopathologically. Mediastinal cavernous lymphangioma is very rare and the diagnosis cannot be made on the basis of radiologic studies alone.
