Description

PCBs, PCDDs, PCDFs, and coplanar PCBs in the waste PCB stockpiles were comprehensively, quantitatively, and congener-specifically analyzed by HRGC/HRMS, and compared to technical PCB such as Kanechlors. Composition of homologues and congeners of PCBs in the waste PCB stockpiles was almost similar to that of Kanechlors, although the ratio of low chlorinated homologues was increased in some fillers of the stabilizer for fluorescent lamp. Coplanar PCBs were dominant in the total of PCDDs/DFs and Co-PCBs, whereas PCDDs and PCDFs were only about 1/10, 000. As for the 2, 3, 7, 8-TCDD toxicity equivalent (TEQ), waste PCB stockpiles have a similar trend with the corresponding kinds of Kanechlor preparations.<BR>We focused the denaturation points of PCBs occurred in the process of using heating medium reported in Yusho accident, which had shown the increase in the ratio of PCDFs to total PCBs, the percentages of TEQ of PCDFs to total TEQ, and the percentages of TEQ of 2, 3, 4, 7, 8-PeCDF and 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8-HxCDF to total TEQ. Those points in the waste PCB stockpiles were compared to Kanechlor preparations and it revealed that the denaturation of PCBs did not occur after having used PCBs as transformer oil, capacitor oil and heat transformer medium.
