Abstract

In recent years, the need for hydro-culture has been increasing because of the aesthetic and sanitary aspects. When a plant is transplanted from soil culture to hydro-culture, the roots are damaged. If the plant is sent as a product before recovering from the damage, the plant may not survive. The plants should be cured under a protected environment until they have recovered from the transplanting damage. From the viewpoint of cost, the curing time should be as short as possible. The main goal of this study was to develop a method to diagnose when the roots had sufficiently recovered from the transplanting damage.
The plant material used was pumpkin (Cucurbita Maxima Duch. cv. Ebisu). The test was done in a growth cabinet with temperature 25°C, humidity 60%, and light intensity 120 μE/m2sec. The light intensity was varied and resulting plant responses, such as changes in stem diameter and leaf temperature, were measured. Cross-correlation functions were calculated, and the time lag and correlation coefficients were compared during the recovery.
Before transplanting, the time lag for stem diameter measurement was 11.6 minutes, and the correlation coefficient was -0.38. During the first 3 days after transplanting, clear peaks of time lag were not found. During the recovery, clear peaks of time lag appeared, and these time lags approached 15 minutes and correlation coefficients approached -0.65. In the step response, the diameter variation changed from first order lag to quadratic lag. Based on these results, the recovery of roots from transplanting damage was diagnosed from the time lag in diameter variation.
