Phalaenopsis orchids are on the market all year round by the production of autumn flowering, which requires low temperature during the summer season. In order to cool plants in a greenhouse during summer, a package air-conditioner or a heat pump having a large cooling capacity has been used. Since this equipment is expensive and the running costs are high, a more economical cooling system is now in great demand. Regarding this situation, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of spot cooling system on Phalaenopsis plants, using a relatively economical spot air-conditioner. The experiment was conducted from 11 August, 1993 to 10April, 1995. Two benches (1.2m×9.6m×1.1m each) were placed in a greenhouse.For spot cooling, one of the benches was covered with heat insulating material and a 1m high tunnel-shaped covering material was placed over the bench. Then, cool air was supplied into the tunnel by the duct of the spot air-conditioner. Another bench had no covering as a conventional control. The daily mean air temperature in the spot cooled tunnel was maintained below 25°C, 4 to 7°C lower than that of thecontrol bench, where no cooled air was supplied. Plants on the control bench did not bloom from July, 1994 until January, 1995, since there were many days when air temperature was higher than 25°C in August, 1994. However, half of the cooled plants flowered in the period of September to November and the quality of the flowers were better than the control plants. Thus, it was proved that the spot cooling system was effective for year-round supply of Phalaenopsis orchids.
